Germiston derby ends in draw

Luso Africa FC and Germiston City Football Club squared off in the first Germiston derby of the ELFA Super League.

It was a perfect Saturday afternoon, with not a drop of rain in sight, when Luso Africa played host to Germiston City Football Club for the first Germiston Derby of the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League.

The match was played on Luso’s home ground, Hattingh Park.

Both teams were eager to make their mark in the league, which started on March 3, but it was the visitors who put the first points on the scoreboard early in the first half with a goal from Sifiso Maseko.

This goal led to an onslaught of back-and-forth play, which allowed Luso to equalise with a goal from Igor Ivanov.

Germiston quickly responded with a second goal from Elija Jack before the teams headed into half-time.

Luso’s second goal came in the second half from Yannick Beyouma.

However, despite a tough change-room talk, Luso looked unusually vulnerable in defence and were punished for their poor defending with another goal from Germiston’s Elija Jack, taking them into the lead 3-2.

However, Benyouma came to the team’s rescue again with another goal shortly before the final whistle, ending the match in a 3-3 draw.

Germiston’s coach, Sreten Pavlovic, praised his young side, which he has had to build from scratch as a number of players have been lost to the Castle League, after the match.

“With one or two experienced players and a young and hungry team, this could be a good season for Germiston,” he said.

In the reserve teams’ clash Luso went down 1-0 early in the first half after a defensive error, but fought back and were able to equalise with a goal from Nuno De Sousa before the half-time whistle.

De Sousa was the hero of the second half too, managing to score the winning goal only moments before the final whistle was blown, giving Luso a 2-1 win over their Germiston counterparts.

Luso will next face the Old Benonians Football Club in an away match, while Germiston will face Boksburg Football Club in a home match at the Germiston City Sports Club.

Both matches will be played on Saturday.

In other Luso results:

Luso’s women’s team faced Janine Van Wyk Football Club (JVW) in a top of the table clash match at Hattingh Park on Friday.

The game was well attended by spectators and supporters, with no one being left disappointed.

Luso started the game very well with the team creating a couple of early chances, but they failed to make them count.

They eventually took the lead shortly before half-time with a well-worked goal by Megalie Mendes.

The home team seemed to pick up right where they left off in the first half by dominating the game.

The team was rewarded with a second goal by Aleksandra Antonijevic, and under continued pressure Alex Michael soon scored the third goal of the match with a well-taken strike, securing the 3-0 win.
