Fun outing for future doctors

Teddy Bear Nursey School pays Life Roseacres Hospital an educational visit.

Life Roseacres Hospital played host to a lively group of learners from the Teddy Bear Nursery School on Friday.

The learners were divided into two groups.

The younger group consisted of 38 learners with four teachers, while the older one had 31 learners and two teachers.

“The theme of our visit is ‘People who help us’,” said Hanlie Burger, founder of the school.

“By organising these hospital visits we hope the children know that nurses and doctors are qualified to help them and they should not be scared of them.”

The tour started in the reception area, where Medirest Rusty the Rhino welcomed everyone and introduced the unit manager, Sr Annelie Bates, who then showed the learners the casualty unit and explained what goes on in there after handing out surgical masks and theatre caps.

Next, they popped into the pharmacy to visit Dr Lawrence Rothman and his team, who gave a short description of the pharmacy and handed out syringes with condensed milk as a treat.

Waheeda Rahim welcomed the group to the paediatric ward and explained how child patients are attended to in hospital.

Casualty unit manager Sr Annelie Bates demonstrated what happens in the unit with Amber McPherson as her little helper when Teddy Bear Nursery School paid Life Roseacres Hospital a visit on Friday.

The learners proceeded to the maternity, theatre and surgical wards and their tour ended in the canteen, where they met paediatrician Dr Hassina Ebrahim and Sr Johanna Ramalo, who gave them safety tips in the case of an emergency.

Before they received snack packs, Sr Doreen Seopa, the infection prevention specialist, gave the learners a lesson on the importance of hand washing.

“We have educational trips every term to broaden our learners’ minds and teach them about hospitals and their significance while teaching them whom they need to call in case of an emergency,” said Hanlie.
