Daycare centre looks to the future

Elsburg Spar, AK Events and the community of Elsburg showed their support for the Elssies Hope, Love and Daycare Centre at a fund-raiser last Saturday.

Elssies Hope, Love and Daycare Centre in Elsburg is under new management and excited to start a new chapter.

“The previous owners of the school left a number of hefty financial bills,” said Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer.

“As the councillor of the ward, I recently visited Elssies Hope, Love and Daycare Centre to discuss with parents and teachers the needs of the school and see how I and the community can help.”

The school currently has 46 children enrolled between the ages of six months and six years, many from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The centre also offers after-school care and activities, with transport services available from surrounding schools.

To help the school get back on track and keep afloat, a number of different fund-raisers and awareness campaigns have been hosted.

One such fund-raiser was held by Elsburg Spar, together with AK Events, in Voortekker Street in Elsburg last Saturday.

“I got involved with the school through my husband and offered my services to help get the school back on the map,” said Amanda van Straaten, the events coordinator of AK Events.

Principal Maria Barnard told the GCN at the event that the school is eager to shake off the past and, with the new committee, start from scratch and move forward.

The school is looking for a number of items, including a DVD player to entertain the children on rainy and cold days, toys, clothes, blankets, educational toys, stationery, doors and locks for doors, paint, corrugated iron sheets to build a shelter outside for the children to play and eat in, and finally food sponsors.

To find out more about the school or to assist with a donation, call Maria Barnard on 011 827 9810 or Alta de Beer on 082 777 1406.
