Residents of Sunny Rock Place, a complex on the corner of Maritz and Pauw Streets in Elsburg have been subjected to a pile-up of rubbish on their pavement due to an ongoing struggle with rubbish removal in the area.
Speaking to the GCN, Yolandi Bhimiah who lives at the complex said, “Every Wednesday morning the black wheelie bins get put outside with the refuse bags inside (the bins were stolen last week).
“When the bin truck comes past, they ignore our bins and collect everyone else’s bins on the street except ours.”
Due to uncollected garbage, the pavement outside the complex has rubbish scattered everywhere.
“I have sent emails to Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer, as well as the managing agent for the complex with no luck,” said Yolandi.
Seeing as many residents use Maritz Street to get to various destinations such as school, the shops, and work, residents fear that the rubbish is no longer just an atrocity but will yield health and safety issues for the community.
“There is always ‘foot traffic’ on this road.
“There are small children walking to school who have to pass this filth lying all over the sidewalk and road.
“A few weeks ago there were big pieces of broken glass lying around.
“We are at our wit’s end, my husband had to pay someone last week just to get this disgusting mess cleaned up and taken away, as it is basically right at the complex entrance and is such an eyesore,” she added.
The GCN contacted the metro for comment to no avail.
