Annual night race set to make a splash

The Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) will be holding their annual night race at Germiston Lake on February 6.

It’s time once again for the Victoria Lake Canoe Club’s (VLC) annual night race.

The race will be held on February 6 at Germiston Lake, and will serve as one of the last opportunities for canoeists to refine their racing and portaging (running with boat) techniques for the world’s toughest endurance canoeing event, the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon, which will be held on February 15, 16 and 17 in Pietermaritzburg.

Race registration will open at 5pm, with canoeists splashing into the water at 6pm.

“The race is a great little tester for all paddlers, from those trying to sharpen their skills for the Dusi, those wanting to up their marathon skills or those who are just keen to do a good honest bit of paddling without killing themselves.

“We plan to have a great event with a good atmosphere for spectators and paddlers alike,” said Wayne Saunders, club chairperson.

The race will see paddlers doing five laps around the lake, a total of 15 km, with a short 50m portage splitting the laps.

Though there is no limit to the number of canoeists who can compete in the race, which is sanctioned by the Gauteng Canoe Union (GCU), all paddlers should be registered with a club and with the GCU.

Clubs are asked to ensure that paddlers who join as new learners are able to swim and recover themselves in a number of difficult situations before they allow them to register with GCU and compete.

Paddlers are also reminded that lifejackets are compulsory.

“Thanks to a generous sponsorship from Ola Factory Stores we have very cool t-shirts for the first 90 entrants.

“Ola will also be providing ice cream handouts to all paddlers on the night,” said Saunders.

For more information on the event or to enter visit the GCU’s website at www.gcu.co.za, online entries close on February 4.
