Making music from his soul

Elandsfontein resident dreams of making it big in the music industry.

He is a young man on a mission to make it big on the hip-hop music scene.

Simphiwe Mtshali (aka Emcee S Master) is 26 years old and hails from Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal.

He moved to Elandsfontein in 2013 after completing his matric in 2012 as he wanted to take his career further and there are more opportunities for an artist in Gauteng.

Simphiwe’s love of music started when he was 12 years old.

“I started by just writing songs and then in 2006 I formed a group called FC Boys.

“We used to rap with no beats, just the clapping of hands,” he said.

In 2011 the group recorded their first track called My Baby, but when Simphiwe left for Gauteng he did not continue with the band.

“When I moved to Elandsfontein I met a guy called ‘Vazz’ and he showed me how to record and mix music.

“We recorded a track together called Blow Cash and it did quite well,” Simphiwe said.

Now with his new skills, Simphiwe has started his own record label Mzansi Records and has three artists signed so far.

“As I am a producer as well, I do all their beats and mixes for them,” he said.

Great music to start the year

He added that his own hip-hop career is also going well and he is working on his second album, as yet untitled, which will be released in April.

His first album is entitled The Sound of Nature.

Simphiwe said that he needs people to help him take his music to the next level, as well as aid with sponsorships for the record label.

His family, mom Doris and siblings Princess, Nonhlanhla and Sanele, are all proud of him and support his musical dream.

Apart from being a musician, Simphiwe is also a proud dad to Future (4) and Mbalenhle (eight months).

He also works at a retail outlet to help pay the bills.

Simphiwe’s next gig is on February 16 at the Esibayeni event in Berea, in Johannesburg.

His advice for young artists is to push hard.

“Hip-hop is more competitive than the other genres and you must keep going and make music.

“Don’t lose hope,” he said.
