Red Cross honours graduates

South African Red Cross Society’s Germiston branch’s home-based care students are ready to make a difference in the community.

It was a very special day at the South African Red Cross Society’s Germiston branch last Saturday, as the team celebrated the graduation of 24 of their home-based care students.

The home-based care programme focuses on the development of a care plan for each client in terms of his or her level of need and disease process.

The emphasis is placed on empowering clients and families to become knowledgeable and self-sufficient in the management of their disease process.

The students of the home-based care programme are recruited from the community in the hope that these students will in turn educate their communities and clients.

The students’ six months of training included two months of theory and four months of practical training at child care centres, homes for the disabled and care centres for the elderly.

Barbara Jansen, manager of the Germiston Red Cross, is proud of all graduates and wished them nothing but success. She hopes that they will each make a difference in someone’s life.

“Caring is a noble profession and cannot be automated.

“Nothing can take the place of the human touch, a kind word, a ready ear or a smile,” she said.

Internationally recognised certificates were presented to students to the applause of their family and friends.
