Residents urged to help keep the elderly safe
All Sector Five residents who are concerned about the elderly are urged to help with this initiative.
After the recent brutal murder of two elderly women and an earlier murder of a blind elderly woman in neighbouring suburbs, the Din-Al-View CPF committee held its inaugural public Elderly Safe @ Home (ES@H) meeting.
The meeting was held in the boardroom above OK Foods at Stone Arch Square in Castleview.
Thirty-nine concerned residents signed the register and discussed the function of the CPF’s newly formed sub-committee.
The ES@H sub-committee is chaired by Miriam Ramjass, assisted by secretary Rene Grobler and public relations officer Mirelle Matthews.
“The Din-Al-View CPF has taken a positive step to protect our elderly residents in Sector Five, which includes the suburbs of Dinwiddie, Albemarle, Castleview, Union and Norton Small Farms,” said Vaughn Jones, chairperson of the Din-Al-View CPF.
Identifying vulnerable aged members in the community, and establishing communication between residents, are of the utmost importance
“ES@H members and CPF patrollers will visit the elderly regularly to ensure their welfare,” said Jones.
Two visitors from the Central and Lambton Klip Sector Four CPFs assisted with advice.
Rene Germeshuisen, chairperson of the Germiston Central CPF, and Pine Pienaar, vice-chairperson of Lambton Klip, also acted as scrutinisers during the voting process.
“Without support from the community, the project would be doomed, but already OK Foods, SW Security, Theart Mey Attorneys and Christian Faith Fellowship have made valuable contributions,” Jones said.
“CPF members and their families have also rendered invaluable assistance.”

Sector Five is currently divided into seven blocks, and it is envisaged that a block captain will be appointed for each block, with the blocks then being sub-divided into more manageable sub-blocks with street captains, thus making it easier to manage the blocks more effectively.
The printout of a list of important telephone numbers is to be issued to all members of the ES@H community.
Licensed VHF two-way radios are already available within the sector, and once a person becomes a registered member of the CPF they can purchase a hand radio.
“SW Security as always can be relied upon to assist the community,” Jones said.
“The Pink Ladies have also become involved with the Din-Al-View CPF and will be attending many future CPF events,” he added.
“The Pink Ladies are well known for their work in the search for missing people using social media.
“They not only assist in the search for children who run away from home or even become victims of international human trafficking, but also offer assistance in the tracing of elderly people who wander off from their homes.
“The Pink Ladies provide a form for recording personal details, medication, allergies, etc, as well as instructions for providing DNA samples in the form of hair and nail clippings,” Jones explained.
“This form is retained by a trusted relative or friend and is only used when reporting a missing person at a police station.
“Medical and counselling services could also be made available.”
Residents who are concerned about the safety of the aged are encouraged to participate in this worthwhile community initiative.
