Tebbutt’s Academy excels at SA Championships

Members from Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy recently travelled to Cape Town to compete in the NMA/ISKA South African Championships.

Members of the Lambton-based Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy shone at the recent NMA/ISKA South African Championships with outstanding performances by all 31 students.

Kanchu Alex Tebbutt explained that he took members of all ages, some as young as five years old, to this year’s tournament.

“Thank you to all the schools for being so accommodating and allowing the children to take time off to travel to the championships,” he said.

Members participated in a number of different disciplines at the event including kata, weapons, full-contact fighting, self-defence and grappling.

“This was the first time we competed in the grappling discipline and we walked away with a gold medal,” said Tebbutt proudly.

High standard at Tebbutt’s grading

This year’s championships were tough and saw a large number of competitors from across SA.

“There were between 700 and 900 competitors at the championships.

“This meant the divisions were big and my students really had to work hard to win, but I am proud to say that not one student came home without a medal,” said Tebbutt.

Now that the championships are over the club is focusing on preparing for a local tournament before closing off the year with their annual prize-giving.

Tebbutt also encouraged more people to join the club’s beginners’ classes which are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
