Five illegal taverns shut in operation

During a recent operation in the Makause informal settlement five illegal taverns were closed down by police.

The Primrose police continue to battle the illegal sale of alcohol in the informal settlements.

In an effort to curb the problem, officers recently held a two-day operation in the Makause informal settlement which saw five illegal taverns closed down and five men, aged between 26 and 47 years old, arrested.

“During the operation, police took to the streets of the informal settlement on foot and observed community members buying and drinking alcohol at five different taverns,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

At each tavern, the owner was asked for their liquor license.

“None of the owners could give officers a valid liquor license and they were arrested and the taverns closed down,” said Maome.

The arrested suspects were detained at the Primrose Police Station.

Some of the men paid an admission of guilt fine before being released while others are set to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

“We are warning the community of Primrose’s informal settlement to refrain from selling liquor without a valid license as we will keep on conducting similar operations week in and week out until we win the war against the illegal sale of alcohol,” said Maome.
