Season openers don’t go Elsburg Eagles way

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club batted and bowled their way into the new season.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club got their season off the ground over the weekend.

It was not a good start for the Elsburg Eagles.

In the Sunday Promotion League the club faced Daveyton Cricket Club at the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval in Dinwiddie.

Elsburg batted first and could only put together 157 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs.

The top batsmen on the day were Dylan Hicks with 21 runs not out and Jacques Jansen van Vuuren with 20 runs.

Daveyton came into bat and were in trouble with only 18 runs on the board and four wickets down.

However, the Elsburg Eagles fitness and concentration let them down and Daveyton made the score with seven wickets down, giving them a three-wicket victory.

The top bowler in the match was Garreth Hann with four wickets for only 24 runs in eight overs.

In the Elsburg Eagles’ Sunday Executive League match away against Avion Cricket Club, things did not go much better.

Elsburg batted first and made 242 runs in their 50 overs for 10 wickets.

The top batsmen were Darren van Tonder with 42 runs, Theuns Herbst with 36 runs, Pieter Nel with 32 runs and Gerhard Herbst with 28 runs.

Avion came into bat and made the runs with seven wickets down, giving them a three-wicket win.

The club’s top bowler in the match was Grant Wilcox with four wickets for 22 runs in four overs.

The club’s other match in the Saturday Second League against Germiston City Cricket Club was a day when the team should have rather stayed in bed.

The match was played at the Germiston City Sports Club and Germiston walked away with a 173 run victory.

The team is new from last season and work still has to be done.
