Bears beat off Hartbeespoort in weekend away match

The Bears Rugby League Club were in top form this weekend as they beat Hartebeespport Rugby League Club.

After a two-week break, the Bears Rugby League Club came out strong and won their Saturday afternoon match against the Hartebeespoort Rugby League Club.

The Bears won the match which was played at the Grizzlies Rugby Club’s home grounds in Pretoria to a full grandstand, 82-4.

In the opening seconds of the match it became clear that Hartebeespoort are still very new to league rugby when Bear’s Jacques van Wyk scored a try after a 60m line break that was then converted by Robin Howell.

Full of confidence, the Bears spent the next 20 minutes perfecting their game plan by spreading the ball wide and attacking gaps.

The team was rewarded with many scoring opportunities.

Hartebeespoort, however, only managed to score one try, which was scored by Brandon Gouws. This meant the Bears took the lead to 48-4 at the half-time whistle.

The second half became more physical, with the Bears deciding to lend some of their players to the inexperienced Hartebeespoort team.

“We hoped that by doing this, we could teach Hartebeespoort more about the rules of rugby league,” explained club chairperson, Andries van der Merwe.

“We have promising team members who aim to inspire and welcome other teams.

“The team spirit this year is great and the ‘brothership’ is clear.”

The team went on to win the match 82-4, with Dries van der Merwe being commended for his phenomenal defence which prevented the opposing team from scoring on several occasions.

“We are preparing for the harder games against Tuks and Rabbitohs rugby league clubs which we believe will be our biggest games of the year” said captain Marcelle Viljoen after the match.

In between preparation for their future matches, the Bears are planning to host an English rugby league club team.

“I believe we have what it takes to compete against international teams,” said van der Merwe.
