Warning – Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds could be expected today

South African Weather Service warns that severe thunderstorms are predicted for this afternoon and evening, which may lead to flooding in parts of Johannesburg.

The South African Weather Service has asked residents to be prepared for more thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and hot weather.

The service this morning released the following warnings:

  • Severe Thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms with the possibility of heavy downpours are predicted for Gauteng, between 2pm and 10pm today.

The weather service has warned that these downpours could lead to possible flooding in parts of Johannesburg.

  • Damaging Winds

Strong winds are expected in Gauteng from this afternoon.

Motorists are reminded to take the necessary precautions when travelling.

They are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distance and headlights should be kept on at all times to increase visibility.

Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets.
