Children head for spelling nationals

Laerskool Elsburg learners need your help to go to Stellenbosch.

Four learners at Laerskool Elsburg proved to be wordsmiths at the Gauteng trials of the WOW National Spelling Bee Competition held at Helderkruin, Roodepoort, on September 15.

The school sent a team of six to the trials and four of the learners made it to the nationals to be held in Stellenbosch on October 21.

Ofentse Phetla (10), Michelle Kandondo (11), Sinawo Dhlamini (11) and Rirothe Siebani (11) are the students who will represent Gauteng at the nationals.

“We are very proud of the learners, they performed exceptionally well,” said a teacher at the school, Sara Rademeyer.

“Phetla placed first in the Grade Six English group, Kandondo placed second followed by Dhlamini in third place.

“Although Siebani didn’t make podium position, she was also selected to be part of the team going to nationals.”

Rademeyer said funds are needed in order for the dream of competing at nationals to become a reality.

“The children need R20 000 for flight tickets, accommodation and food,” said Rademeyer.

“The school is also trying to help raise funds through a Heritage Day event that will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at the school.

“Children will come to school in their cultural clothing and have a eat-and-share; all the funds raised will go towards the trip.”

Rademeyer appeals to businesses and individuals to help raise money for the trip.

“This is a big achievement and we really want the children to take full advantage of an opportunity like this,” said Rademeyer.

“Any donation, big or small, will be greatly appreciated and will help the girls.”
