The magic of musical theatre

Tic Toc Nursery School has a talented musical theatre actor and director in its employ.

Since he was a little boy musical theatre has enchanted him and today Gareth Davies (24) is making a name for himself, both as an actor and as a director, in the musical theatre world.

Gareth works at Tic Toc Nursery School, in Lambton, where he does all the school’s concerts.

He lives in Parkdene, in Boksburg, and has a drama school in Benoni called Keyboard Magic.

The young man studied events management after matriculating from Boksburg High School in 2010 but his passion has always been musical theatre.

“I was always fascinated with musical theatre so I decided to give it a try and pursue it.

“I also attained my teacher’s diploma in musical theatre and I love teaching children.

“They have so much life and energy.”

Gareth said his granddad George Lindsay and his mother Ann always loved musicals and thinks this is where his interest was piqued.

Gareth Davies (24) and Ashleigh Kroll (centre stage) directed Stardust the Musical which was staged at the Springs Theatre earlier this year.

“Watching a production takes you to another place and the acting and singing bring tears of enjoyment to your eyes,” Gareth said.

Gareth has appeared in a number of theatre productions, including Let me entertain you, Jack and the Beanstalk and Aladdin which is the show that saw him audition for the first time and clinch the part.

He won the Barnyard Search for Talent three years ago, as well as a SANCTA best actor award for his role as Dolly Dolores Dumpling in Jack and the Beanstalk.

Gareth is busy making a musical theatre CD which he hopes will be released before Christmas.

He has the unwavering support of his mom Ann, father Walter and sister Sarah Botes (26) and said that he values this support.

“It is so nice to get on stage and become a different character,” Gareth said.

“My passion for acting takes over and the character you are playing enhances you.”

Gareth added that he believes watching theatre expands your mind and gives you inspiration.

Although he loves acting, he wants to direct as he feels this would give him the ability to be more creative.

“You can run with your thoughts, your plan and your story and decide what you want the audience to feel,” he said.

He co-directed the play Stardust the Musical with Ashleigh Kroll – a performing artist, actress, singer and dancer.

The production was staged successfully at the Springs Theatre in July.

Gareth is looking forward to growing his career and making a name for himself.
