Mishka eyes the crown

Wychwood beauty Mishka Moodley (17) is determined to make a difference in the community.

Hard work, ambition and personal growth are the driving forces behind Wychwood beauty, Mishka Moodley’s success.

Mishka (17) was recently announced as a finalist in the Mr and Miss Jacaranda Show Model and Arts 2017.

“I entered the competition in May this year. I recently received an email informing me that I am a finalist,” said Mishka.

“I was thrilled when I received the news as I only started modelling this year.

“I am very excited about this competition and hope to do well in it.”

“I decided to do modelling because I love it and because I want to build my self-confidence,” said Mishka.

“One of the important qualities one has to have as a model, is confidence – I admire the confidence I have seen in a lot of models.

“It is important as a person to be confident and content with who you are. Although I have confidence in myself, it is just not enough right now. I know that modelling will boost it.”

The youngster’s hobbies include singing, dancing, acting and drawing.

Mishka said she is enjoying her time in the competition.

“Since I received the news, I have been to a boot camp and will be going to more boot camps before the final show on September 23, in Pretoria,” said Mishka.

“This competition is amazing as they are teaching us a lot.

“We are taught entrepreneurial skills, life skills and the importance of working with charities and our respective communities.

“I realised that it is not about the modelling and winning the crown but rather about growing as a person.”

The Wychwood resident said they have to raise money for the entry fee.

“The entry fee is R2 700 and we have to raise it ourselves by the end of August,” said Mishka.

“They don’t want our parents to spoon feed us by giving us the money. They want us to find ways to earn it.

“We are being taught independence through this task.

“It is for that reason that I have decided to sell bracelets made of beads to raise money for the entry fee.

“To give back to the community, I have decided part of the profit I make from selling the bracelets will go to charity.”

The youngster started making the bracelets in July and has already made 400.

“I am fortunate to have the help of my neighbours,” said Mishka.

“They assist me and I am truly grateful for that.

“This journey of making bracelets has given birth to my business, Paw Out Your Heart.

“I want to continue making bracelets after the competition and look at making other things through this business.”

The talented youngster needs the community’s help to raise funds.

“I appeal to the community to help me raise funds by buying my bracelets,” said Mishka.

“I am appealing to businesses as well because I also need to find a sponsor for my activities as a finalist among other things.”

Mishka told the GCN that she just wants to be herself in the competition.

“I am unique and being myself is the best that I can be, and that is how I intend on winning the competition,” said Mishka.

“I have learnt a lot and hope to implement all that I have been taught.”
