Actively fighting crime

Netball and soccer were played at the Sports Against Crime event held recently in Dukathole.

It was all about sports and fun at the recent Sports Against Crime event held in Dukathole.

The annual event was organised by Const Queen Sibeko and Const Maxwell (from the Germiston SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit) in collaboration with the Germiston SAPS Crime Prevention Youth Desk, the Germiston SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) and SERGE.

“Among other things, the aim of the event is to address substance abuse in the community, especially among the youth,” said Sibeko.

“Through this event we aim to empower the youth and guide them on how to progress in life.”

The event kicked off with aerobics to warm up and was followed by a walk from Dukathole Extension Five.

“People of different ages gathered for the walk which involved the distribution of safety tip pamphlets,” said Sibeko.

“The walk ended at the sports grounds which gave way to netball and soccer matches.”

Sibeko added that the event was sponsored by Johnson Matthey.

“We are truly grateful for the sponsorship received from Johnson Matthey,” said Sibeko.

“They gave us T-shirts for all those who took part in the walk, trophies and medals for the netball and soccer players and refreshments, among other things.

“They also sponsored last year’s event and they are always helpful with our projects.”

Germiston SAPS station commander Brig Nkhensani Lemba, Vispol commander Col Eric Khosa and deputy chairperson for the Germiston Sector Two CPF, Maggie Ramushu, were among those present at the event.

Representatives from the Department of Health, Ekurhuleni West College (EWC) Germiston Campus, SRC Silkworth Recovery and Care Centre, the Department of Community Safety and the University of Johannesburg also attended the event to inspire and motivate those present.

“Career guidance and health talks from various stakeholders were among the activities of the day,” said Sibeko.

“Reneè Germeshuizen, chairman of the Germiston CPF, was also part of the walk.

“The day was a success. Thank you to everybody who contributed to it.”

The soccer and netball matches were played by both u-17 and adult teams.

Super Eagles Football Club won in the adults’ category while Masondo Sports Academy’s u-17 team won in their category.

Powerful Girls Netball Club’s u-17 and adult teams were the champions in their respective divisions.
