Podium position in Algeria

Long jump athlete, Pedro Aaron, placed third at the African Junior Athletics Championships.

Pedro Aaron (18) put Germiston on the map at the African Junior Athletics Championships held in Algeria from June 29 to July 2.

Aaron was part of the South African Junior team who was selected to compete in Algeria (GCN, June 30, “Aaron goes the distance”).

The long jump athlete placed third at the championships.

“I was aiming for first place but I am happy with my results,” said Aaron.

“I was a bit nervous but managed to shake it off and secure a podium position.”

Aaron’s coach, Stephanè Kotzè, was also thrilled with the results.

“It takes a lot for one to get such impressive results at a competition of that magnitude,” said Kotzè.

“I am proud of him, he did well.”

Aaron said he missed second position by a few inches.

“I was in second place until my last jump of 7.30m, which took me to third place,” said Aaron.

“The second place winner jumped 7.33m and the winning distance was 7.36m.

“I think the nerves were my downfall as my personal best is 7.96m and I feel I could have done better.

“I am happy with my results and will work on improving my performance.”

The youngster was competing against 13 other athletes.

“This was a great experience for him, he saw what he needs to do to get gold and I believe he will do better next time,” said Kotzè.

“He is a junior athlete and has a lot of potential, I believe in him.

“We are now working towards competing at the World Championships, next year.”

Aaron said he will start training now for next year’s competition.

“I have my eyes set on the World Championships. I will continue to work hard in order to do my best and bring home the gold,” said Aaron.

“I am aiming for a personal best of 8m; this will have to be my goal if I want to compete with the best in the world.”
