Close-knit match for Simmer

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club’s teams won three out of their four home games against Johannesburg Police Rugby Club’s teams on Saturday.

Rugby was back at the Germiston Stadium after a three week break for Germiston Simmer Rugby Club.

Simmer faced the Johannesburg Police Rugby Club during their Pirates Grand Challenge Bailey Cup held on Saturday.

Simmer’s first team took an early lead with Sarel Ras going over five minutes into the game, but the lack of game time took its toll.

Simmer just could not get the game going and a lot of handling errors kept Police in the game which saw an 18-5 score at half-time in favour of Police.

During the break Simmer seemed to go back to the drawing board and make some changes to their game plan.

This proved to be beneficial as Simmer’s Morne van der Veyver, Anton Coetzee and Carl Wright scored in the second half to take the scoreboard to 26-18.

Police hit back with two tries and it seemed that they had sealed the game as they were leading by six points with only three minutes to go.

Simmer soon had the ball back and Police kept giving away penalties which the home team took full advantage of.

Good team work between Wenzel Niemand and Anton Coetzee, who made the conversion, saw the home team claim a 33-32 win.

Man of the Match was Simmer’s Niemand and Gerrie Gertzen.

This win takes Simmer six points clear at the top of the log.

Other results:

  • The second team lost 45- 24 to Police.
  • The u-21 team won 24-7.
  • The u-19 team won 31-19.

The next games will be played away against Alberton on July 15.
