Athlete takes a great leap into SA team

Germiston’s long jump athlete Pedro Aaron is set to compete at the African Junior Athletics Championships.

Germiston and South Africa will be well represented at the African Junior Athletics Championships, to be held in Algeria, from tomorrow (June 29) to Sunday (July 2).

Germiston Callies athlete Pedro Aaron (18) was recently selected into the South African Junior team which will compete at the championships.

Aaron is a long distance athlete and his selection into the team came after he achieved the qualifying distance.

“Aaron achieved a 7.96m distance which was more than the qualifying distance of 7.63m,” said his coach, Stephanè Kotzè.

“He achieved the distance at the competition held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in March.”

Kotzè also said the Aaron had to get a podium position at another championship to qualify.

“The athlete also took first place at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) South African Championships, held in Cape Town, in April,” he said.

“He needed both results to be selected into the South African team.

“I am very proud of him; he is always focused and puts in a lot of effort during training and competitions.”

Aaron is a student at Hoërskool Goudrif and is excited about his recent achievement.

“It really feels good to be part of the SA team and I am excited,” said Aaron.

“I can’t wait to compete, not everyone is given such a big opportunity and I want to give it my best.”

The youngster said, with a smile on his face, that he is aiming for gold.

Although the competition only starts tomorrow (June 29), the team of 17 left on Monday.

Kotzè said he is also hoping the athlete will do well.

“Competition will be tough, with 57 countries represented at the championships,” said Kotzè.

“I have faith in him; he is well prepared and trained.

“This is really a big achievement, especially at such a young age.”
