Simmer takes their game to the top

Simmer faced Diggers in a thrilling game at the Germiston Stadium, on Saturday.

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club is celebrating after the first team’s great win against their old enemy Diggers Rugby Club on Saturday.

This took the local team to the top of the Golden Lions Rugby Union Pirates Grand Challenge league log.

The tightly contested, physical match saw Simmer take the win 31-20.

The five points for the victory takes the team four points clear at the top of the table.

It was a welcome return for Quinton Bothma to the club as he went over in the corner for Simmer’s first try early in the match after a well-worked backline move.

After the restart Diggers started to camp in the Simmer half due to missed tackles, but the pressure was well maintained.

Wentzel Niemand went over after the team’s second visit to the Diggers half and when Quintin Norris scored a runaway try from his own tryline it looked like it was going to be a long day for the visitors, but in true Diggers fashion they came back and the score was 19-7 to Simmer at the break.

From the restart Diggers closed the gap to 19-13 but when Bothma scored his second try of the match and the van der Vyver brothers, Morné and Armand, combined perfectly for the try of the day, the match was over as a contest.

The second team had a bad day on the field and went down 41-0.

The third team opened the day with a well-deserved 50-17 win for the “ou manne”.

The u-21 was hard done by and lost their match 23-24, but the u-19 team sealed the day off with a good 44-24 win for the young guys of the club.
