Update – Single line shuttle service introduced after Elandsfontein train collision

Metrorail technical teams work around the clock to restore normal train operations.

Following a train collision in Elandsfontein, yesterday (Thursday), in which one person died and 102 others were injured, Metrorail has introduced a single line shuttle service in an effort to alleviate commuter inconvenience.

“Metrorail has introduced a single line shuttle train service running from Germiston to Elandsfontein as part of its contingency measures.

“The shuttle service will, however, not stop at Isando,” explained Tony Games acting metrorail spokesperson.

This single service is set to run until technical teams from Perway have completed replacing the damaged sleepers on the line affected by the accident.

“An electrical team has already replaced the stolen signalling cables and the damaged coaches have been removed from the line,” said Games.

The shuttle train service is running as follows:

• From Leralla to Kempton Park,
• Between Elandsfontein and Kempton Park,
• From Elandsfontein to Germiston,
• From Germiston to Johannesburg,
• From Pretoria to Kempton Park.

“While trains from Pretoria are turning at Kempton Park and from Johannesburg are turning at Germiston.

“Buses are also running between Elandsfontein and Isando to complement the shuttle service.

“Metrorail’s appointed technical teams continue to work hard around the clock with external service providers to recover normal train operations,” he said.

Investigations into the cause of the collision continue, though signalling cable theft was previously reported to be the cause.
