ALERT: Message stating Germiston SPCA is closing down is a hoax

NSPCA says Germiston SPCA will not be shutting its doors.

A message doing the rounds on social media stating that the Germiston SPCA will be closing down is a hoax.

Although the Germiston SPCA is in dire financial straits as per information supplied to the GCN by the SPCA’s manager Burt Coetzee and treasurer Cathy Valente-Parkinson in a recent article, the SPCA will not be shutting its doors in the next few days.

The hoax message states that the Germiston SPCA is closing down and there are currently 250 animals (including, kittens , puppies, grown dogs and cats, birds, hamsters and horses) who will be euthanased if the society does not receive financial assistance.

It goes on to say that other animal organisations will also be affected if the SPCA closes and that over a 1 000 animals will be affected.

It urges people to adopt or donate.

This message is not true.

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has issued the following statement:

“The Germiston SPCA is not closing nor is it in danger of closing.

“Messages circulating to this effect have been refuted by the management committee of this SPCA which is nevertheless in need of funding – as are so many SPCAs throughout our country.

“The National Council of SPCAs appeals to all caring people to support the SPCA in their own area which may also be in urgent need of funding and meaningful support.

“To support your local SPCA, please work with and through them – directly.

“Donate directly and support their funding efforts.

“Please do not hand over cash to anyone claiming to be raising funds on behalf of an SPCA.”
