How does an SPCA adoption work?

What do I pay for when I adopt from the SPCA?
Each successful adoption from an SPCA includes spaying or neutering, de-worming, vaccinations, a physical exam, optional microchip, collar and tag (cats only) and a lifetime of unconditional love (priceless).
Adoption fees are R800 for dogs and R650 for cats (prices are subject to change).
When you apply to adopt a pet from the SPCA, you will pay a R150 non-refundable deposit, which is included in the total adoption fee.
What do I need to know about adopting from the SPCA?
To adopt a pet from the SPCA, you must be over the age of 18, your property must be fully enclosed, you must be able to afford the services of a private vet and you must have your own transport to take your pet to the vet.
So how does it work?
First view the animals currently up for adoption by visiting the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCAs’ adoption web page or follow the organisation on Facebook, where pets looking for homes are regularly posted.
Alternatively, visit the adoption kennels to meet adoptable pets in person.
Visiting hours are from 8am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, except Wednesdays, when the kennels are open from 8am to noon.
Operating hours on Saturdays are from 8am to noon.
Remember that an adoption application will need to be completed in person.
This helps the SPCA to perfectly match a family with a pet.
You will need to take along your ID book as well as proof of address.
After your application is complete, the SPCA will conduct a home inspection.
But why does the SPCA need to conduct a home check?
This is to make sure that if you have opted to adopt a large dog that you have high enough walls, while if you have chosen to adopt a small dog that it will not be able to escape through your fence.
What happens next?
Once your adoption is approved, a meet-and-greet will be arranged. This means your family and current pet will meet the family’s new addition.
If it all works out and your adopted pet is ready for its forever home, you will be notified and you can collect your new addition.
