Metro fills key vacancies

The metro has appointed staff to fill critical management roles.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality (EMM) has made several senior management appointments, all of which were effective on May 2.

Gugu Pride Malaza-Duda has been appointed chief financial officer (CFO) and Leseba Mojapelo chief operations officer (COO).

Among her qualifications, Malaza-Duda boasts a chartered accountant qualification from SAICA.She has a wealth of experience across private and public institutions, having previously been at the helm of finances in institutions such as the SABC and FNB.

Her role as VP: strategy and risk integration for Africa at Anglo Gold Ashanti is expected to contribute immensely to the prudent and sound management of Ekurhuleni’s public purse.

With her 14 years’ experience as a CA, coupled with a total of 17 years of financial management and accounting experience, as well as her experience in formulating and implementing global strategies both operational and financial, the metro is satisfied that she is the best candidate for the position of CFO.

The former special adviser to the Minister of Transport, Lesiba Mojapelo, is not new to Ekurhuleni.

He brings institutional memory and the flair in capital budget spending required to move service delivery speedily.

Mojapelo served Ekurhuleni in various capacities, including as acting executive director (HOD): infrastructure services, general manager (HOD): 2010 and special projects and director: roads and stormwater, among other areas.

He served the City of Johannesburg as the divisional head where, among many other important tasks, he supervised the rollout of free Wi-Fi, the smart city strategy and the intelligence command centre.

These are key attributes required as the metro evolves into a smart and developmental city.

Another important appointment for the sake of community safety in Ekurhuleni is that of chief of police.

Former deputy chief of police in charge of logistics Gen Isaac Mapiyeye is now chief of police.

Mapiyeye boasts 31 years’ experience in policing.

He has acquired a B-Tech degree in traffic safety management from the Technikon Pretoria and holds a public administration qualification from Regenesys.
