Wilgerbosdrift hits the heights internationally and locally
Top class lots from Cape stud.
Prominent Cape stud farm Wilgerbosdrift has enjoyed an outstanding couple of weeks, with owner Mary Slack enjoying big race success overseas, local sire Flower Alley firing on all cylinders, and locally bred thoroughbreds notching up big race win after big race win.
The Mary Slack owned Diamond Fields stamped herself a top class filly when downing triple G1 winner Alice Springs to land the G3 Gladness Stakes, over 1 400m at Naas recently.
A daughter of champion sire Fastnet Rock, the Fozzy Stack trained filly holds entries in all of the G3 Athasi Stakes, G3 Amethyst Stakes and G2 Lanwades Stud Stakes.
Out of the Shamardal mare Question Times, Diamond Fields was runner up in the G2 Sands Point Stakes, last year, and has now won or placed in eight of 12 starts.
She joins the likes of El Gran Senor, Nijinsky II, Giant’s Causeway, Mr Brooks and Excelebration as a winner of the Gladness Stakes.
A Form Bloodstock purchase at 2015 Goffs Sale, she cost just 55 000 Euro.
Wilgerbosdrift, whose graduates Orchid Island and Nightingale are both G1 winners this year, look to have a really exciting stallion on their hands in the form of Flower Alley.
A proven sire, whose top offspring include the Kentucky Derby winning champion I’ll Have Another, Flower Alley’s runners have been enjoying a rich vein of success lately, with his once beaten daughter Splash Hit landing a feature in North America, and another daughter, Flower Fashion (co-owned by Mary Slack), making it two wins from just three outings when scoring over 1 600m at Maisons-Laffitte.
Both Splash Hit and Flower Fashion look capable of going on to win more good races for Flower Alley, who himself earned more than $2 million on the track.
A son of champion sire Distorted Humor, and from the same family as champion sire Lyphard, Flower Alley’s first yearlings will be offered for sale in 2018.
Wilgerbosdrift, whose past National Sale graduates include such champions and top class sires as Dynasty and Elusive Fort, will be offering 20 yearlings at next month’s National Yearling Sale, with their draft including lots by such prominent stallions as Dynasty, Fort Wood, Silvano, Trippi and Var.
