Young music talent is living his dream

Germiston South has music talent in the form of Owen ‘Youngengod’ Phakade.

Owen Phakade (28), of Germiston South, is talented and determined to make his mark in the music industry.

The musical youngster, also known as Youngengod, launched his first EP (extended play), titled Ingenuity 1.0, in March.

Youngengod’s musical journey dates back to his childhood days.

“I realised my music dream when I was in Grade 10 and had just received my first computer,” he said.

“Soon after that I downloaded music software and began making beats.

“I had started writing lyrics, rapping with friends and listening to other famous rappers in Grade Five but then I thought it was more of a hobby until I realised that I love it.”

Taking his love for music seriously, he decided to further his studies in music.

“I studied a diploma in music performance at the Campus of Performing Arts after matric,” said Youngengod.

“While I was studying I played bass guitar for Benjamin Dube and Wanda Baloyi.

“It was an exciting experience and a great learning curve for me.

“I learnt how to read music and play guitar and piano during my studies.”

He has also produced music for other artists.

“I co-own Kolumbus Beats, which is a production company, and through that I have produced music for Cruz Afrika and Exe the Douche, among others,” he said.

“I believe that I have a sound that is different to others.

“Versatility explains my music; it has a touch of different genres.”

Youngengod encouraged other artists and youth to never give up on their dreams.

“You should never put your dreams on hold, always strive for success,” he said.

“Another thing I would advise is to research thoroughly that which you want to do; information is out there.”
