Drama filled soccer weekend

Luso Africa FC kick-start their Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League campaign with a gruelling match against Randburg Football Club.

Luso Africa FC’s senior side battled for possession of the ball in the club’s gruelling match against Randburg Football Club, on Saturday afternoon, at Hattingh Park.

The match was the team’s first in the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League season, with their previous match against Edenvale Football Club being cancelled last week.

This cancellation left the team feeling under-prepared for the clash.

They lost 4-0, despite the team’s continuous pressure on the visitors.

The frustration-filled first half saw two Luso players receive yellow cards, in their desperate attempts to gain and maintain possession of the ball.

The physical game saw Luso forced to make an early substitution with goalkeeper David Olowadasa going off injured and being replaced by reserve team keeper Dillon Ribeiro.

Both team’s headed into the change rooms goalless, however, Randburg’s superior performance in the second half secured their victory.

The visitors looked the sharper team, winning possession of the ball with their tough attack strategy, and some mistakes from the Luso defence, and despite a good performance by Ribeiro, Randburg scored four goals before the final whistle.

Luso’s coaching staff were bitterly disappointed by the first team’s performance and the result and have challenged the players to bounce back next week and start a run of wins as they have their sights set on the league title this season.

Luso’s reserves team made it clear, in their match against their Randburg counterparts, that they were there to win.

The heated match saw no goals until the second half where Randburg managed to score, after a contentious penalty was given to the away team and converted.

Battling back, Luso’s Mdu Mndawe equalised almost immediately, only moments before another contentious decision went against Luso, which saw their striker being shown a straight red card.

A great defensive effort by Luso saw the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

Other results:

  • On Friday, Luso’s women’s B team played their final game of the season against Old Bens Football Club.

The team had a brilliant game winning 15-0, with a number of great team and individual goals.

The club’s women’s A team match was postponed to this week and should they beat Mondeor Football Club, both the A and B team will finish tied in second place in the league.

  • Luso’s second division veterans team beat Alberton FC 4-2 to progress to the semi-finals in the Veterans Cup, while the division one veterans beat Kempton FC 5-2 in the first leg of the semi-finals.
  • Luso’s SAB team played Dolphin Football Club on Thursday, at Hattingh Park.

Despite the 2-2 score, Luso was awarded the points for the fixture after the Dolphin’s coach and players attacked the referee for awarding a 92nd minute penalty to Luso.
