Women raise money for a worthy cause

Women of Germiston come together for an indulgent afternoon to raise much-needed funds for St Giles Association.

“We are fighting to keep our heads above water.”

These were the words of Di Hasapis, from St Giles Association, a home that caters and cares for disabled adults.

The home, based in Kensington, is dependent on donations from private and corporate sponsors, as well as fund-raisers to keep its doors open.

Jenny Buchker, Desireé Hartslief, and Dawn and Yvonne Dalgety, residents of Primrose, heeded the home’s call for help and decided to host a special women’s only afternoon to help raise some much-needed funds for the home.

The event was held at the Wychwood Scouts Hall, last Sunday, and saw women from across the city joining the festivities.

“Yvonne first became involved with the home, hosting a biscuit drive every November to give the residents of St Giles a treat.

“It was through her involvement we heard of the home’s need for fund-raising and decided to do something to help,” said Desireé.

The event came together in just three weeks, with some help from the community.

“The community donated items to our mystery auction, which was just one of the items on the agenda,” Desireé explained.

Other highlights included different demonstrations and displays, all aimed at women, including make-up, fitness and pleasure.

The event was a huge success with R16 411 being raised and donated to the home.

Di thanked everyone for their generosity and explained that the funds raised would be used for everyday running expenses at the home.
