CGA Youth and Junior Championships thrill

Central Gauteng Athletics Track and Field Commission hosted a successful CGA Youth and Junior Championships at the Germiston Stadium this weekend.

The weather was perfect as athletes gathered at the Germiston Stadium, on Saturday, for the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Youth and Junior Championships.

The CGA was pleased with the event and the season as a whole.

“This successful athletics season has produced exceptional performances, all building up to towards athletes being selected to represent the province in the up-coming provincial championships, as well as a chance to represent South African in a number of international championships such as the 2017 World Championships to be held in London later this year,” said Mandla Radebe on behalf of the CGA.

This weekend’s championship was the final trial for youth and junior athletes hoping to be selected for the National Track and Field Youth and Junior Championships, which will be held in Cape Town on April 7 and 8.

“There was no sub-youth (under 15) age category at this weekend’s championships, nor will there be at the National Youth and Junior Championships in April,” said Radebe.

A number of the Germiston Callies Harriers athletes shone at the meeting, securing podium finishes.

Some of their results were:

  • Pedro Aaron won gold in the men’s u-19 long jump.
  • Simonè van der Nest won gold for both the women’s u-19 100m and 200m sprint.
  • Verusca Woest came first in both the girls’ u-17 100m and 200m sprint.
  • Angelia Gouws came in third in the women’s u-19 long jump.
  • Tanya Ehrke placed second in the women’s u-19 100m hurdles.

“It was a great weekend, I was impressed with the athletes’ performances, they really gave it their all,” said their coach, Stephanè Kotzè.

“Going forward we hope to continue producing such results and improving where necessary.”

The event also allowed the CGA the chance to announce their three-year partnership with JM Busha Investment Group.

“CGA Track and Field Commission welcomes the partnership which will indeed assist the commission in delivering a high standard of competition to the athletes,” said Radebe.

On March 18 the CGA will host the Senior Championships at UJ, Auckland Park.
