Four nabbed for speeding on N3 highway

EMPD officers are continuing to target speedsters on the city’s highways.

The EMPD High Speed Unit’s operation, on Sunday morning, netted four drivers who ended up behind bars after being caught allegedly doing speeds in excess of 160km/h.

The drivers were nabbed on the N3 south highway, near the Rand Airport exit, in an operation which was conducted between 5am and 10am.

“A 42-year-old female driver in a silver Kia Sportage, clocked at 168km/h, advanced the reason that she was late for a church service and was arrested at 7.40am.

“The second culprit was a 38-year-old male driving a blue Golf GTi, who registered 164km/h on this 120km/h stretch of the freeway.

“The remainder of the arrestees were nabbed when each was clocked at 161km/h, claiming lateness for a cycle race meeting and a church service,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

All four of the arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Germiston Police Station.

They were later released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
