Staff held up in armed robbery

Newly opened eatery targeted by criminals.

It was five minutes to closing time last Tuesday evening, and staff at Food Fighters were serving their last customers of the evening.

Little did owners Edward Stokell and Dirk Fourie, along with three of their staff members, know that they were about to become the victims of an armed robbery.

“It was five to seven and we were just about to close,” said Stokell.

“Three men came in and two of them approached the counter and ordered a Coke, while the other one stood a bit further back.

“As we were ringing up the item they ordered another two.

“They were acting rather suspiciously and as I gave them their change they pulled out pistols and jumped over the counter.”

The men demanded that they open the cash register and then Stokell and Fourie were dragged to the kitchen, where they and their three staff members (who were in the kitchen) were ordered to lie on the floor.

The men took an undisclosed sum of money, a laptop, two cellphones, a wallet and an external hard drive before making off in a bright orange car.

“We thank the Lambton Klip Sector Four CPF members, as well as our local security company who responded so quickly to the scene,” Stokell said.

“They were all excellent.”

Stokell and Fourie are now looking at a number of options to upgrade security at the business.

No one was injured in the robbery and the Germiston SAPS are currently investigating.
