Ekurhuleni’s Harambee (BRT system) route tested

Mayor conducts systems readiness test on Bus Rapid Transport system.

In light of the metro’s commitment towards an effective and affordable transport system, the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina and transport MMC, Clr Petrus Mabunda  conducted a systems readiness test on the metro’s Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system, today, February 8.

The BRT system, dubbed Harambee, is a major logistics project which will drive integration of the various towns of Ekurhuleni.

The executive mayor, together with the transport MMC and major stakeholders in public transport will for the first time ride in the Harambee buses.

They will be joined by the SANTACO president, Mr Taaiborch, and the general secretary of the National Taxi Association, Mr Mlalaza, and the Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry committee.

The test is part of a route and systems test drive on the approved BRT route from Tembisa to Kempton Park.

The tests will include determining viability of the identified routes, vehicle movement and possible congestion within the mixed traffic road infrastructure during on and off peak times, among other things.

This exercise is an integral part of ensuring that, by the time the Harambee operations are officially launched, there is consensus with all stakeholders and a seamless system of operation.
