Man grabs handbag and runs

Alleged thief injured when victim attempts to stop his escape.

A 32-year-old man was recently arrested by the Primrose police for common robbery.

The arrest was made at the Geldenhuys train station, in Primrose, after the man allegedly stole a woman’s handbag.

“The victim told officers that she had been standing with her mother, waiting for the train, when the man grabbed her handbag and ran.

“She claims that before she could reach him, he threw it to an accomplice who disappeared into the nearby bushes,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The woman claims she grabbed the accused and the two struggled.

“During the struggle the man fell hard onto the platform and sustained serious injuries,” said Maome.

The train guards stopped the train and called the Primrose police to the scene.

The man was taken to Tembisa Hospital for medical attention before being formally charged at the Primrose police station.

He has since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where his case was postponed for plea and trial.
