Graphic footage: Police officer shot in business robbery may have been shot by one of his own

Video of police officer's shooting surfaces, Hawks investigate.

A police officer was shot in the head while responding to a business robbery at a BP garage, in the Twala Section of Katlehong North, early on Thursday morning.

According to police the officer, Const Tshepo Tladi, was shot in the head as police tried to stop the fleeing suspects. He was transported to Union Hospital, in Alberton, in a critical condition but he later succumbed to his injuries.

However, new information, in the form of a video, has come to light which suggests that the officer was allegedly shot by one of his own.

“We can’t give comment on the video as yet as it (the video) came to our attention on Sunday,” said the provisional head of corporate communication for the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Gauteng, Brig Mathapelo Peters.

“Currently there is a high level investigation being done by the Hawks and we are waiting for the outcome of the investigations.”

Peters also said they can’t confirm anything regarding the video or its accuracy as its origin is unknown.

“We don’t know who took the video but there is officially sourced CCTV footage that is part of the investigation by the Hawks,” she said.

The robbers were able to escape police and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

A case of business robbery and attempted murder was opened for investigation.

“No one was arrested during the incident, however police were able to seize the vehicle used by the suspects.

“The number of suspects involved in the crime hasn’t been confirmed at this stage,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, of the Ekurhuleni West cluster.
