Sporting highlights of May and June 2016

A quick look at some of 2016’s sporting thrills.

May and June’s 2016 sports throwback.

May:

  • Golden Gloves, African Ring and Emperors Palace hosted the hard-hitting boxing extravaganza ‘Brawl for it All’. The seven-fight event had both young and old on the edge of their seats, with five of the fights ending in technical knock-outs (TKO).
  • The Safari Gold Club hosted its bi-annual charity golf day at the Germiston Golf Club. The event raised R400 000 through the day’s activities, including an auction at the prize-giving.
  • Seven-year-old Mickayla Engelbrecht, from Primrose, shone in her first fight at the Clash of the Titans kickboxing tournament, when she walked away with a silver medal.
  • Two juniors from the Ekurhuleni Tennis School Of Excellence (ETSOE), did extremely well at the annual Mahikeng Junior Tennis Tournament. Jaydan Rooskrantz won the boys’ u-10 singles title, while Lethabo Bapela won the boys u-14 singles title.
  • Colin Ledwaba and Katiso Hlahatsi from Victoria Lake Canoe Club, got selected to represent Gauteng at the South African Marathon Championships.
  • Four members from the Germiston Karate Centre, represented Gauteng at the United World Karate Federation National Championship held in Kibler Park. All fighters shone in their respective categories and produced eight medals between them.

June:

  • Matthew van Blerk (19), from Delville, was selected in the South African u-19 paintball team, to represent the country at the Paintball World Cup in Paris.
  • Lambton’s Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy competed in the Arnold Classic, at the Sandton Convention Centre. This was the first time the competition had come to the African continent – and Tebbutt’s members clinched three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
  • Unique Physique’s Marius and Logan Wessels returned triumphant from the Arnold Classic Africa 2016, when they placed second and third in their respective bodybuilding categories.
  • Members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 27, braved the cold and participated in the Winter Solstice Swim Challenge.
