Check your vehicle thoroughly

Follow this checklist for safe holiday motoring.

If you are planning a road trip during the festive season, Oakhurst Insurance offers you a handy five-point checklist, to make sure your vehicle is fit for the road:

1. Check vehicle fluids:

Check all your vehicle’s fluids including the oil, coolant, brake fluid and water in your windscreen washer tank. If necessary, change your oil and oil filter.

2. Check tyre wear and pressure:

You need at least 1.6mm of tread on your tyres. If the tread is 1.5mm or under, you should rather replace your tyres. Also make sure you have the recommended tyre pressure (which you should find in your owner’s manual) and remember to check your spare.

3. Wash windscreens and check wipers:

Before setting out, you should thoroughly wash your back and front windscreens for maximum visibility. Also check your wiper blades for wear and tear and replace them if necessary.

4. Check lights and indicators:

Check that all your indicators, headlights and brake lights work properly. Replace any bulbs that aren’t working.

5. Emergency equipment:

Make sure your vehicle has a spare tyre, wheel jack, spanner and emergency reflective triangle – and that everything works properly. It’s also handy to keep a torch, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher in your vehicle.

Staying safe on the roads, all starts with the condition of your vehicle.
