‘Tis the season to donate blood

Save a life this festive season by donating blood to the SANBS.

A blood donation can be the difference between life and death.

This is something Christopher Jaftha, of Top Billing fame, strongly believes.

He recently walked into the Linksfield SANBS donor centre, where the TV presenter and proud SANBS ambassador was welcomed by friendly SANBS staff, to make what he recalls is his 23rd blood donation since he started giving blood a few years ago.

Christopher is a regular donor who frequently visits the centre with his parents.

Once he had diligently filled in his self-exclusion questionnaire, he sat patiently with one of the nurses to answer some health-related questions and have his vitals checked, including his iron and sugar levels, blood pressure and weight – to ensure that he’s in perfect health to donate.

Christopher then settled into a donation chair and got ready to have his blood drawn.

As his blood flows into the expectant bag, he talks briefly about his journey as a blood donor.

He was encouraged to start donating blood, because his father was a committed donor for many years.

“My dad was really the catalyst for me donating blood.

“He taught me all he could about the importance of being a regular donor and because of that, I spread the word to as many people as possible,” said Christopher.

Speaking about some of his peers’ views about donating blood, he said that some have the desire to give, but due to time and health-related limitations they have difficulties doing so.

“With better education about the blood service and the difference it makes in the lives of millions, people would be keen to explore other ways to support the cause, without necessarily giving blood,” he added.

Christopher is one of several celebrities who take time out of their busy schedules to support SANBS in its endeavour to collect the 3000 units of blood it needs, to meet the daily demand across the country.

With the festive season looming, the blood services anticipates some additional pressures in adequately providing blood, to treat accident victims and other patients in need.

“Our awareness campaigns prioritise bringing young donors on board and they look up to passionate partners like Christopher, for inspiration to continue doing the right thing by donating blood regularly.

“Such commitment enhances our efforts to make sure we have enough blood for those in need, especially during the festive season,” explained SANBS marketing manager, Silungile Mlambo.
