Community marches against substance abuse

Rondebult residents take a stand against substance abuse in the area.

Residents of Rondebult, CPF members, Elsburg police, Elsburg’s Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) and the councillor of Ward 41, took a stand against substance abuse in the area, last Saturday.

The community marched to raise awareness of the problem that has become an epidemic nationwide, in the hope of sensitising and educating the community – about the impact of substance abuse and its correlation to crime and other social ills, such as domestic violence, road accidents and mental illness.

Edwin Ndhlovu, community leader and member of the CPF, was the first to arrive for the march and wasn’t worried by the slow response from the community.

“Our hope is to educate the community, even on a small scale.

“This is the first time we’re hosting such an event – so even if we only have a few people involved today, we can continue to grow community participation at the next event,” he said.

He further urged the community to come forward, if they know of people addicted to drugs and to create awareness of the problem, so that substance abusers can receive the necessary help.
