Warning – severe thunderstorms and flooding predicted for today

Beware of flash floods, heavy rain - says South Africa Weather Service.

The South African Weather Service said parts of the country can expect above normal rainfall for the rest of the week.

A 60 per cent chance of rain has been predicted for Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal until Saturday.

This comes after heavy rains and flash floods wreaked havoc in Ekurhuleni on Wednesday.

This morning the service has released the following warnings for Gauteng:

  • Severe Thunderstorms:
Severe thunderstorms with the possibility of large hail and damaging winds and reduced visibility expected in some areas of Gauteng from 1pm to 11pm.
  •  Flooding:
Localised flooding is expected in  parts of the province until 10pm.
  • High discomfort values:
Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over some parts of Gauteng.

Residents are urged to take the necessary precautions when travelling and are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances when driving.

Headlights should also be kept on at all times to increase visibility.

Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets.
