Tough weekend for Eagles

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club had a disappointing weekend, losing both of their Easterns Cricket League matches.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club suffered a blow this weekend, losing both their Second League and Promotion League clashes.

On Saturday the team faced the Midrand Cricket Club at their home ground, the Scaw Main Oval in Dinwiddie.

The club batted first and managed to get 145 runs on the board before they were all out.

Schalk Groenewald and Garreth Hann were credited with making most of the Eagles’ runs, scoring 35 and 26 runs respectively.

The Eagles then took to the field, where despite their best efforts, they were unable to crack the Midrand batting partnerships.

The top wicket taker was Schalk Groenewald who took two wickets for only 16 runs; he was awarded man of the match.

The visitors won the match with six wickets in hand.

On Sunday the Eagles continued their Promotion League campaign against the KwaThema Cricket Club, at the Scaw Main Oval.

KwaThema won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a score of 282 runs in their 50 overs, all out.

George de Waal and Garreth Hann were the day’s top bowlers, taking three wickets each.

The Eagles were unable to match the batting efforts of the visitors, only managing to make 158 runs in their 50 overs, all out. KwaThema won the match by 124 runs.

The top run-scorers were Trent Murray, who scored 35 runs, and Martiens Grobler, who scored 16 runs

Man of the match was awarded to George de Waal.

“Our fielding let us down on the day,” said Grobler

The Presidents League match between the Eagles and the Geluksdal Cricket Club was cancelled.

“The water restrictions in the area meant that the Elspark Sport Complex’s pitch was unprepared,” said Grobler.

The team will next face the Kempton Park Cricket Club in an away match on Saturday.
