A weekend of success

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club had a successful weekend, winning both their Promotional League and first league matches in the on-going Easterns Cricket League.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club, formally known as Scaw Metals Cricket Club, had a successful weekend, winning both their Saturday and Sunday matches in the Easterns Cricket League.

Both of the side’s matches were played at home at the Scaw Main Oval in Dinwiddie.

On Sunday, the club continued their Promotional League campaign with a match against the Benoni-based Etwatwa Cricket Club.

Elsburg won the match by 22 runs, after winning the toss and deciding to bat first.

The side posted a score of 178 all out in 50 overs, with Trent Murray named the top batsman for the Elsburg team, scoring 87 of the day’s runs.

The Etwatwa Cricket Club came in to bat, but the strong fielding and bowling from the home side meant the visitors only scored 156 runs before they were bowled out.

Elsburg’s top bowlers were Garreth Hann, with five wickets for 45 runs in 10 overs and Jacques Jansen van Vuuren, with two wickets for 28 runs in eight overs.

The men of the match awards went to Murray, for his batting, and Hann for his skill in the field.

This side also played in the Easterns Cricket League first league on Saturday afternoon, facing the Tembisa Cricket Club.

Elsburg were once again the victors, winning the match by 130 runs with six wickets in hand.

Tembisa batted first and made 126 runs all out in 35 overs, with Murray taking three wickets for 14 runs in seven overs and Jeandre Cloete taking two wickets for 12 runs in seven overs.

The home team was able to catch and beat the score set in just 20 overs, only losing four wickets.

Billy Millar shone on the day, scoring 56 of the team’s runs and Murray scoring 30.

Man of the match was awarded to Millar for his overall performance. In addition to his 56 runs, he also took one of the match’s wickets.

“Well done to the team on a good start for the Saturday season and a successful win in the Promotional League,” said Martiens Grobler, the team captain.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club’s next two matches will be played away; the side will face the Daveyton Cricket Club in the first league on Saturday and the Avion Cricket Club in the Promotional League on Sunday.
