Germiston bowl over the competition

The Germiston Cricket Club started their Easterns Cricket League on a high note, with a win over the Wattville Cricket Club.

The Germiston City Cricket Club began their Easterns Cricket League campaign with an impressive win over the Benoni-based Wattville Cricket Club.

The two teams took to the pitch at Germiston City Sports Grounds for their Fourth League match, on Saturday afternoon.

Germiston, who were in high spirits, won the game comfortably by 93 runs, with one wicket in hand.

Winning the toss and selecting to bat first, Germiston posted a score of 254 runs for nine wickets, in their 30 overs at the crease.

Johan Botha was the team’s top batsman of the day, scoring 42 of the day’s runs, with Casper van Wyk and Jan van Wyk tallying the next highest run rates, with 36 and 32, respectively.

It was then Wattville’s turn to bat.

Thanks to a strong fielding effort from Germiston, the visiting club managed to get to only 161 runs, with three wickets in hand, in their 30 overs.

Germiston’s Tyrell Hendrikz took four of the club’s wickets. and Kevin Cox two wickets.

The club will next face the Benoni Northern’s Cricket Club, in a home match, on Saturday afternoon.

Players will take to the field at 1.15pm.
