Metro’s swimming pools open their gates

With the onset of warmer weather the metro has opened its swimming pools to the public.

Hot summer days are almost upon us and the metro’s community swimming pools are ready and set to cool you down during hot days.

As of September 1, some of the metro’s swimming pools opened their gates to patrons for the long awaited “splish, splash” season.

In preparation for the swimming season, some of the pools went through an extensive process of renovation and maintenance.

The preparations included the normal annual acid washing of all pools, painting of all concrete pools, repairs to all tiled pools and the replacing of broken tiles, repairs to pool expansion joints, repairs to all plumbing, repairs to all electrical faults, cleaning of pool areas and buildings, the appointment of seasonal lifeguards, and purchasing of water purification chemicals.

There are three pool categories across the metro, with different facilities, such as Category A, which has an indoor, heated swimming pool and is an arena for hosting big swimming competitions.

Category B pools are mainly outdoors, with grandstands and Category C pools are normal swimming pools with basic amenities.

The metro has set the entrance times according to the pool categories, as follows:

  • Category A: Delville Swimming Pool: 5.30am to 8.30pm (Tuesdays to Thursdays); 5.30am to 6pm on Fridays; 10am to 6pm on Saturdays and 2pm to 6pm on Sundays. The pool is closed on a Monday.
  • Categories B and C: All other pools in Germiston fall into these categories. The pools are closed on Mondays. From Tuesdays to Saturdays they are open from 10am to 6pm and, on Sundays and public holidays, from 2pm to 6pm.

The entrance fees to community pools, according to their categories, are:

  • Category A – R15 per person.
  • Category B – R10 per person.
  • Category C – R5 per person.

The following swimming pools are open in the Germiston area: Delville, Elsburg, Leondale, Palm Ridge, Primrose, Gerdview and Dinwiddie.

The Katlehong and Klopper Park swimming pools are closed.
