Eveline Adams showcases her skills in jukskei during the Golden Games that were held at the Germiston Stadium on Friday.
Germiston Stadium was abuzz with Golden Games activities on Friday.
The games were hosted by the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD), in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation (GSACR).
The games give the elderly a platform on which to display their talents in sport, indigenous and fun games.
“These games are aimed at promoting active ageing, a healthy lifestyle and social integration amongst the elderly,” said Gauteng Department of Social Development’s Thebe Mohatle.
Activities on the day included rugby, ball throwing, jukskei, football, ball relay, a dress-up race and goal shooting among others.
Participants were transported by bus from different parts of Gauteng to compete in the games.
“There are different stages of the games and today was a regional stage,” said a selector at the games, Johannes Phadime.
“Participants competed at the district games, where athletes were selected to compete here, at the regionals.
“Athletes selected at these regionals will compete at the provincials, the National Golden Games.
“I am a selector in the soccer division.”
Athletes showcased their skills and talents and had a blast at the same time.
Winners of the games will represent Gauteng at the National Golden Games, that are set to take place in Limpopo, in October.
