Cross-country tests athletes

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted this year’s instalment of the Cross-Country Provincial Championships at the Boksburg Stadium on August 13.

“In the midst of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Germiston-based Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) continues to produce champions,” said CGA’s Mbalenhle Ngema.

“We hosted the 2016 Cross-Country Provincial Championships on August 13.

“The championships were held at the Boksburg Stadium, building up to the National Cross-Country Championships which will be held on September 10, in George.”

Athletes produced impressive results.

“Great performances were witnessed in the men’s 10km event, which is deemed by most as the highlight event of the entire cross-country season,” said Ngema.

CGA congratulates Phillimon Mathiba of Nedbank RC on being the 2016 CGA 10km men’s champion, clocking a time of 32 minutes and seven seconds.

Cornelia Joubert of Boxer AC was crowned the 2016 CGA 10km women’s champion, clocking in a time of 39 minutes and 57 seconds.

“It was an unexpected victory for her and she hopes to be in the top six at the upcoming championships in order to go through to the World Cross-Country Championships,” said Ngema.

“The CGA team who will head to George in September are expected to scoop a few gold medals.

“Well done to all top finishers and respective category winners of this year’s CGA Cross-Country Championships and to all who have made this season a success.”
