Man’s suspicious actions lead to arrests

The Elsburg SAPS have arrested three people on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

While out conducting stop-and-searches in the Roodekop informal settlement, on Wednesday, the Elsburg SAPS noticed five suspicious-looking men.

“The men were sitting around a wood fire outside a place of residence,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“The police searched them and found nothing illegal in their possession, however, after they were searched they dispersed to different places and the police followed one of the men to his shack, as he was acting very suspiciously.”

Upon entering the shack, the police found two Zimbabwean women and the man they had searched earlier.

They also found a lot of goods lying on the floor of the shack and, when they asked the women about the articles, they denied any knowledge of them.

These goods, suspected to be stolen, were found in a shack in the Roodekop informal settlement by members of the Elsburg SAPS, on Wednesday.

The man who had been searched claimed they were his.

“The police asked the man for his proof of purchase and he then allegedly confessed to having stolen the goods from a Roodekop industrial business, the previous evening.

“The officers proceeded to search the rest of the shack and discovered an unlicensed firearm and a magazine containing eight rounds of live ammunition,” said Phooko.

The women, both aged 26, and the man, aged 29, were arrested and cases of possession of suspected stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were opened.

They were detained at the Germiston Police Station and are due to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
