Metro to provide young people with free ICT skills

Young people in Germiston can register for a free Learnerthon programme on Saturday.

With the world rapidly switching to a digital era, the metro will provide free training to enable young people to write and create mobile applications, games and websites.

On Saturday, August 13, the Germiston and Katlehong libraries will be open for registration to all young people between the ages of seven and 21, for an eight-week free course in coding – skills used to design mobile applications, games and websites.

The eight-week long Learnerthon programme will provide candidates with skills on computer basics, digital literacy, creative coding, app studio and touch develop (Gamification).

This will empower young people with free information communication technology (ICT) coding skills, to inspire them to pursue careers in the ICT space and spark their creative side.

Students will be expected to work in groups to decide on a project towards the end of the course and to develop it from start to finish, with the support of their mentors.

An 80 per cent pass rate on the digital literacy course is a prerequisite for students to progress to the next course.

After the Learnerthon programme students have the option to pursue a six-week course on computer analytics, also offered for free at Ekurhuleni libraries.

Registration will take place from 10am, at the Germiston Library, situated at the Germiston Civic Centre, on the corner of Queen and Cross streets, and at the Katlehong Library, situated at the Katlehong Civic Centre, at 1 Masakhane Street, in Katlehong.
