Double win for Germiston

Germiston City Football Club’s first and reserve sides went head-to-head with Zwide Football Club on Saturday.

Germiston City Football Club faced Zwide Football Club in an away match, on Saturday.

“After a disastrous 2-3 defeat by Alberton Football Club last weekend, Germiston is in dire need of points to keep their super league hopes alive,” said the local team’s chairman, Peter Oliver.

“The local team is dangling perilously close to the relegation zone, lying in 12th position of 16 teams.

“With Germiston’s captain, Scotty Chando, out due to work commitments, Germiston put together a side that would be tested by Zwide.”

The local side played well and against a similarly matched Zwide side, with the score kept to 0-0 at half-time.

“The second half was an all-out battle, with the game ebbing and flowing with both defences doing well,” explained Oliver.

“Zwide were first to score, with a well placed shot beating a diving Benji Kaunda.

“Germiston mounted a number of attacks and finally broke Zwide’s defence with a great solo effort by Lebogang Chokoe to level the score.

“With 20 minutes remaining the sides were deadlocked at 1-1.

“After much struggle, Salifyagi Mugala beat Zwide’s goalkeeper to give Germiston a much-needed and deserving win.”

Germiston won with a 2-1 score, while the reserve team beat Zwide 3-1.
