Simmer defeat top team

The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club won their Senior Grand Challenge Rugby League match against Randburg Diggers.

The Diggers Rugby Club, from Randburg, were undefeated in the Senior Grand Challenge Rugby League – until Saturday afternoon.

The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club’s first team then beat the top team 21-12, on the club’s home grounds, at Germiston Stadium.

Two of the side’s tries were scored by Barry Niemand and he was named Man of the Match, while Pieter Mocke converted all of the team’s tries.

A strong defence and exceptional line-outs from Simmer enabled them to contain and beat back the Diggers’ onslaught.

The win means Simmer is logged second overall in the Senior Grand Challenge Rugby League.

Simmer’s second team were not as lucky in their match against the Diggers second side, losing 15-24.

The side’s tries were scored by Brian Lee and Marcell Pretorius.

Simmer dominated in the first half, but Diggers were able to turn the match around in the second half.

Johan Roodt, from the Simmer Rugby Club, was named Man of the Match after his excellent performance on the field.

Brian Lee, Christo van Zyl and Akhona Gumede also received credit for their efforts on the field.

The side is currently second on the log.

The u-20 teams also faced-off on Saturday afternoon, with Simmer walking away the victors.

The final score was 17-7.

The tight game saw Justin Liebenberg score a try and Werner Thomas succeeded with two conversions and one penalty shot.

The result leaves the Simmer u-20 team top of their log, with the Krugersdorp Harlequins second.
